چکیده

Self-explaining is an effective metacognitive strategy that can help learners develop deeper understanding of the material they study. This experiment explored if the format of material (i.e., text or diagrams) influences the self-explanation effect. Twenty subjects were presented with information about the human circulatory system and prompted to self-explain; 10 received this information in text and 10 in diagrams. Results showed that students given diagrams performed significantly better on post-tests than students given text. Diagrams students also generated significantly more self-explanations that text students. Furthermore, the benefits of self-explaining were much greater in the diagrams condition. To discover why diagrams can promote the self-explanation effect, results are interpreted with reference to the multiple differences in the semantic, cognitive and affective properties of the texts and diagrams studied. © 2003 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Content-Free Computer Supports for Self-Explaining: Modifiable Typing Interface and Prompting

Self-explaining, which asks students to generate explanations while reading a text, is a self-constructive activity and is helpful for students’ learning. Studies have revealed that prompts by a human tutor promote students’ self-explanations. However, most studies on self-explaining focus on spoken self-explanations. This study investigates the effects of two kinds of content-free computer sup...

Learning From Text With Diagrams: Promoting Mental Model Development and Inference Generation

Two experiments investigated learning outcomes and comprehension processes when students learned about the heart and circulatory system using (a) text only, (b) text with simplified diagrams designed to highlight important structural relations, or (c) text with more detailed diagrams reflecting a more accurate representation. Experiment 1 found that both types of diagrams supported mental model...

Learning with Diagrams: Effects on Inferences and the Integration of Information

Students studied materials about the human heart and circulatory system using either (a) text only, (b) text with simple diagrams, or (c) text with detailed diagrams. During learning, students self-explained [1] the materials. Explanations were transcribed, separated into propositions, and analyzed according to the type of learning process they represented. Results demonstrated that diagrams pr...
